LEARN ABOUT INDIGENOUS CULTURE

About 40 minutes west of Salem, Chachalu Tribal Museum and Cultural Center honors the culture of the Kalapuya people who lived in the area for thousands of years, as well as the modern-day Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde. Revolving exhibits showcase everything from modern abstract paintings to tool artifacts and hand-carved canoes. Every Friday from May to December, stop by the pop-up Chachalu Marketplace for local art, crafts and food. For more Native American art, Willamette University’s Hallie Ford Museum of Art showcases an outstanding collection of handwoven baskets, plus beautiful hand-carved wooden masks.

GET A FIRST-HAND GLIMPSE AT OREGON PIONEER LIFE

About 10 minutes west of Salem, the Brunk Farmstead gives visitors a visceral sense of what pioneer life was really like. The renovated 1861 house is filled with original items from three generations of the Brunk family, including a rope bed that made its way via the Oregon Trail. The original granary and outhouse are on the property, and a shop stocked with antique tools.

The nearby Polk County Museum will immerse you in regional history from 1842 to 1960. You can see pioneer-style dresses, historic maps and even a life-size replica of a covered wagon. Think you might have relatives who traveled the Oregon Trail? Explore your family lineage in the research library.

North of Salem, Newell Pioneer Village has four historic buildings you can tour. The 1852 home of Robert Newell, Oregon’s first Speaker of the House, is filled with antique quilts, fine china and a Chickering square grand piano, plus an exhibit of gowns worn by wives of Oregon Governors dating to the mid 19th century.

Nearby Champoeg State Park is where Oregon's first provisional government was formed in 1843. A thriving town of 200 was established, only to be washed away by a flood in 1861, but an 1860s-style garden and barn remain. Pop into the visitor center for a crash course on the area’s history and then take a guided tour of the pioneer town of Champoeg.

DIVE INTO OREGON’S HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT

Interested in more recent history? Take a tour of the 1938 art-deco-style State Capitol and see rotating exhibits that highlight what makes Oregon unique. The new Welcome Center also features interactive displays, allowing you to explore the state’s diverse cultures, heritage sites and legislative processes at your own pace.

The nearby Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health is more than just the filming location of the 1975 film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The historic building tells the stories of the people who have worked and lived at the hospital since 1883 through artifacts, photographs and audio recordings. Catch one of the special exhibits for a closer look at what life was like there.

Take the family to Salem’s Forest History Center, a free museum dedicated to preserving Oregon’s forestry legacy. The kiddos will love the old logging and fire-fighting tools. There’s also intriguing information about Oregon’s fire-lookout towers and reforestation efforts.

TOUR HISTORIC HOMES AND A FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT MARVEL

A guided tour through the meticulously preserved 1894 Queen Anne Victorian house at Deepwood Museum and Gardens will transport you back to the Gilded Age. Peruse the opulent parlor and grand period furnishings, then stroll around the formal gardens.

As the original 1878 home of the founding editor of the Oregon Statesman, Bush House Museum is a mirror of Salem’s heritage. A guided tour allows you to see the Bush family’s original furnishings, from simple kitchen items to the ornate pump organ and photographs taken by one of the Bush daughters.

Architecture enthusiasts will definitely want a guided tour of Oregon’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house. The 1963 Usonian–style Gordon House is an architectural marvel and includes elements that were innovative for their time, such as cantilevered roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows.

CHECK OUT OLD-TIMEY MILLS, TRAINS AND FIRETRUCKS

In addition to featuring some of the oldest frame houses in the Pacific Northwest, Salem’s Willamette Heritage Center lets you tour the original buildings and impressive machinery of the once-thriving Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

If your kiddos love trains and trucks, a trip to Powerland Heritage Park is a must. The park has 14 museums dedicated to vintage farm machinery, engines, trucks, motorcycles and more. Kids can get up close to the machinery and even ride the mini trains during special events.
