Sue Mason’s Artist Statement:
In 1963 our first child, David, was born. I felt I needed a creative outlet along with my new role as mother. After taking a couple of classes at my local community college, my husband put together a kit for my kickwheel and I began making fetish pots inspired by the Zuni Indians of the Southwest. I exhibited those pit fired and burnished pots decorated with shells, feathers, driftwood and semi-precious stones in Carmel, CA and Santa Fe, New Mexico for the next 27 years.
In 1993 I was inspired by a blue and white ceramic plate from Italy and worked in blue and white on my pots for the next 10 years. I started adding colors to my blue and white pieces when we moved to Monmouth in 2003 and I'm continuing to enjoy this current phase of my love of clay.
